In all honesty, Ric Flair was the one who broke the "stereotype" that you had to be a big guy to be the Heavyweight Champion. Flair showed that a technically sound, great promo guy could be the champ. Benoit, Guererro, Angle and Jericho all benefited from Flair's multiple title runs.
Do I believe in the stigma? Yes, I do. Guys like Rey are prime examples that it does exist. But I do feel that he is US title material. I don't see him as a heavyweight champion, but defenitely US champion.

One thing. You cant place Rhyno in this list. The dude is 280..... thats big.
I see what you mean and you are right on many points. I would go along with Chazz saying that Flair broke the stigma when he became World champion. In many ways the NWA were ahead of the WWE in the 80's. They had the Flairs and Steamboats winning the title and carrying the promotion. It took the WWE a while to get away from the Hogan, Heavyweight idea.
When you look at it all the great World champions IMO have been between the 220-240 mark. They put on better matches then the bigger guys, faster matches and technically sound ones.
Now then as for Rey. I couldnt see Rey carrying a company as the champion. Reys style really doesnt allow for this. For me the longest match I think Rey can realistically carry is a 15 minute match up. As a credible champion you have to go as far as putting on 20-25minute match ups. Rey Rey doesnt have it.
Christian on the other hand does. I never got why people looked over Christian at Edge. When it comes to mic skills and ring skills, Christian beats Edge hands down. He was just unfortunate that Edge was 6'5". Look to Christian to be the next Bret Hart.

Good thread. Now for my 1 1/2 cents worth. The problem with Christian is not his size or mic skills, it's his character. He's simply too goofy to be the World Heavyweight Champion. To me and a lot of other people, he's still CLB-Creepy Little Bastard. That's not to say that a World Champion can't be humorous, just look at Steve Austin, the Rock, HBK, Jericho, Mick Foley, HHH...all of them have comedic talent. But they weren't goofy. Well maybe Mick Foley when he was Mankind, but that leads me to my next point. All of the above mentioned World Champions were viewed as something that Christian is not, at least not yet. And that's an ass-kicker. All of the afore mentioned people had a different side to their character. They could turn the goofiness on and off. When it came time to get in the ring, they got serious. That's something that Christian is missing.
If I didn't explain that correctly, I apologize (no I don't).
p.s. And I agree that Christian is head and shoulders above Edge, who in my opinion, is the cheesiest wrestler in the Main Event bracket. Velvetta Cheesy...the cheesiest.

I think that here lately, Christian has shown that he has what it takes to be a Heavyweight contender. My question is, would he get the chance to show it on Raw? Right now, Benoit is working with Kane, and the only reason HHH is not involved is because he is working with Shawn. More than likely, Benoit is going to drop the belt to HHH at SummerSlam, and if that happens you know that Hunter wants to work with Edge, so Edge will then get bumped ahead of Christian. Then, there is Jericho who should be back to the main-event level by the end of the year, and then you have Orton. Now, I really would rather Vince not push Orton so fast, but it looks like he is going to. If all this were to happen, Christian is the odd man out.
