View Full Version : Shouldn't John Cena be doing more to stay over?

It's no secret that John Cena is probably one of the most over superstars in the WWE today. The man doesn't even have to talk to receive defeaning cheers. I am really starting to have problems with he has become as of late. When he was a heel, he was a badass who didn't care about anyone but himself and it didn't hurt that his ring skills were pretty good. Ever since he turned face I've had so many problems with his character. His matches are becoming so recycled as of late. It's basically the same exact thing all the time. It's not exciting at all nor does it do anything for his character. Another is how he seems to suck up to the crowd looking for cheap pops and such when he doesn't need them one bit. IMO, the WWE should have left his character exactly the same when he turned other than the fact of him cheating to win. People dub this man the next Austin but the thing is that Austin got over for being different, going against the grain, and just not caring what anyone else thought. Austin let people cheer him instead of making them cheer him. When I saw John Cena's feud with Kurt Angle, his raps he used to do everytime he came out (he still does them but they're not as good when he is sucking up to the crowd), and the way he called out and verbally abused authority like Vince McMahon and Paul Heyman, I saw the makings of the next Austin. The method to my madness is that this little hero type, cheap pop getting, overly recycled match John Cena doesn't stand as much chance at longevity as his former heel self who got over by being all about himself. If there is any chance at him really being the next Austin he needs to go back to his heel ways even as a face character. What do you guys think of John Cena's character right now? Do you agree, disagree?

Honestly, I think Cena's character is becoming stale mainly for two reasons, one, his competiton is weak and everyone knows that his opponents' gimmicks are going nowhere fast(i.e. FBI, A-Train, Big Show,). Second, Cena can't wrestle past five minutes. The only two matches Cena had that were good over five minutes were against the Undertaker and Kurt Angle, people who could carry their own in matches over five minutes.
The true question isn't if Cena can stay over(because he will) but if the WWE can build an opponent custom-made for Cena so he can have a great wrestling match and go over five minutes.
P.S., I enjoyed him more as a heel mainly because he had many outlets to insult the faces in the WWE.

Cena was much better as a heel and would rather see him with gold as a heel.

I don't think it has anything to do with him not being able to wrestle past five minutes because he has had good matches in the past with people like the Big Show, Benoit, Taker, and Angle. The thing I do agree with you on is the fact that he can't really carry a matchup by himself. IMO, the WWE should have him drop the US title in a few months and just have him go wild. Have him come out for no reason at all and give people the F-U. He needs a strong feud with a big name star to establish himself better. Taker didn't do a good enough job putting him over and many people know exactly why. The Smackdown side is suffering in the "special attraction" character because Mick Foley does nothing but help people get over while Taker seems to think that he is still in his prime squashing superstars. It doesn't do anything for your show when your special attraction won't do what's good for the brand as a whole rather than doing what's good for his character to save face. I don't think it's that Cena can't work as a face I think it is that the WWE for some strange reason feels that all faces should be the hero/suck up to the crowd character.

I think they could do a swap to Raw, live at Raw might get him more spotlight than he is getting on Smackdown.

It has nothing to do with him not getting enough spotlight. John Cena should stay on SD where he is needed.

A little while ago, I saw John Cena play his face role the best he has to date since becoming US Champion. The sad part about it is that it was on Velocity. This promo should have been on SD. He did his little hype up the crowd thing which I am not to big on but as long as it's kept to a minimum I'll have no problem with it. Then he switched gears and showed a more serious side of his character when he went on to deliver one of his most solid promos in a while. He put over the US title in a big way saying that he would die before he lets someone take it off of him. IMO, if he can establish himself as a serious face who has no regard for authority and cares about no one but himself (Austin-like), uses comedy once in a while when absolutely necessary, can have a match on TV which isn't regurgitated, and defend the US title atleast once or twice a month on SD not only will his character stay over and the credibility of the US title will go up but he won't risk becoming stale and just another heroic face.

I don't really care whether Cena is a face or a heel, because when he was a heel he was still getting alot of pops from the crowd. I think he needs to drop the U.S. Title to Dupree so it will get Dupree over, and then I think he needs to feud with Guerrero for the WWE Title. Now I know that they are both faces, but they could still put on a good match regardless of that. Because I think by the end of the year, that Cena needs to have the WWE title around his waist.
