Hello kiddies. Chazz here with another edition of Focal Point. Today I'll be discussing the Women's division.

Focal Point: The Women's Division

To say that the talent level in the women's division of the WWE today is better than what it has ever been is true. The women in the WWE who actually do wrestle are faster, stronger and more technically sound. Yet, for some reason, it seems as though the WWE has a hard time in convincing the fans that these women are more than just T & A. Then again, with women like Trish, Torrie and Stacy on the roster, I can see why the WWE is having this problem.

No! I'm not suggesting that the WWE needs to make their women look butchy. Hell, if that were the case then the WWE would not have a women's division at all. Face it. Guys are the majority of the fanbase, and the WWE knows that. They also know that us guys (well most of us) love to look at beautiful women. And the WWE has given us some great divas to look at. From the glamorous (and the late) Miss Elizabeth, to Sable, Sunny and even China and to the current roster of Divas, the WWE has made sure that the male audience always had "eye candy".

But today, these women are not just good looking. Most of the roster has talent in the ring. Stacy, Torrie and Terri (before she was let go) have no skills nor any business in the ring. But, for the rest of the roster, the talent is their to make people take notice that these lovely ladies are more than just a pretty face.

The question is, how do you get the fans to take them seriously? The answer? It will never happen. Guys are guys, and while we may be amazed at the ability of these women, the first thing we see is the georgeous faces, the enhanced breasts, and the nice asses. Trish is a good wrestler. But when she comes out the men don't think of how great she is in the ring. They think of how hot she is, think about that spread she did in Raw magazine, or the Divas photo shoot. The WWE knows this and gives us what we want. So in all honesty, the WWE is not trying to make an attempt to get the fans to take the women's division seriously.

We want to see Stacy go through the ropes like she does. We want to see bra and panties, lingerie or evening gown matches. We want Sable and Torrie in Playboy, because having two women in a photoshoot together is a fantasy for most men. Hey, the WWE isn't stupid. We want it and they give it to us.

And while that is great, it is also, like Jesse Jackson says, "A Travesty!". Women like Victoria, Molly, Gail Kim and Jazz have so much talent to have some good matches. I'm sure it is hard for them to go out and perform and do some great moves only to hear "We want puppies!". Yet, that is the reality of the women's division. Even if the WWE did try to make the divison legit, they would find it very hard to do.

Then again, would the Diva's themselves want it any other way? Most of them are sex symbols, and they know that they are "eye candy". To stay in the WWE, they must possess something of importance. Stacy has her legs and ass, Trish has her ass and breasts and Torrie has.....been in Playboy. Sex sells and these divas know that. And that is what keeps them employed.

Even with the talent they possess, it still plays second fiddle to their sexyness. I'm sure most probably think I am writing this as a male sexist, but that aint the case. I'm just pointing out the obvious, and if that seems sexist then so be it. The fact that these divas can wrestle is just a bonus.

If you want to blame anyone for this image, then blame the fans. We want to see these women in revealing outfits. We want T & A. The WWE supplies that for us. Until the race of man takes a new lease on life and decides that it would rather see stimulating matches rather than stimulating bodies, then nothing will change.

Good column, Chazz. Sums up a lot of what is true.
Realisticly, women cannot hope to compete in terms of power, strength or endurance. Nor, do I think, is there much appetite for brutality and severe punishment being dished out to the women.(Does anyone want Stacy to wear the crimson mask, for instance?) Where they should have a chance is in flexibility and athleticism - let's see a few more moonsaults, handsprings, Shooting Star presses from the women. There's no reason why they can't learn that sort of stuff.
Until they do something along these lines, the women's division will be largely looked upon as eye candy, but, hey, that's not illegal.

Yeah very solid column Chazz and I have to agree with what you said. For a while back in 2002 and some of 2003 I was really getting into the Womens division. I looked foreward to seeing Victoria as the Psycho champ taking on Trish and Jazz, those were some solid matches. But as of late my interest has gone. The last year has seen a much bigger resurgance in the "eye candy" phenominon. People were beginning to take the Womens divison seriously but it has gone back again. How? I dont know. T & A is here to stay.
