I've never seen a thread like this on WP (let alone IOW and WI for that matter), so why not make one now?
There have been so many events in history that after researching and viewing perhaps a picture, it brings an emotion out in us. I can be all sorts of different pictures from war to happiness, etc.
Here's some that I think are good:
Some people may know this off RATM's 'self titled' CD, but this an incredible photo to me for other reasons. It's a photo of a Vietnamese monk sacrificing himself for the love of his country and for his hate to what was happening around that time in the 60's. Apparently he sat perfectly still.
This photo is chilling. The story behind it is that he was a Vietcong suspect. He was murder in broad daylight.
This picture is a picture that most people should know. Ché Guevara.
You might be thinking, "WTF are you posting that for?", well I believe that this is chilling picture. That day everyone's lives were turned around. 9/11 marked a day where everyone was fearing where they went. It affected everyone and still does to many people.
This picture always stuns me. It gives me the impression that around WW2, Hitler was like a Jesus figure. I'm no way a Hitler supporter, but there's no denying that he was one of the best leaders of all time. The way he used his thoughts change certain Germans was crazy. He was also a charismatic speaker too. Again, I'm not a Hitler supporter at all, but he affected a lot of people.
Feel free to psot your own, but please keep the funny/stupid/etc pictures out. Make another thread for that. Let's keep this thread different from the rest.
Thanks, :coolspot:

He's one of the gob****es who brought communism to Cuba.
He freed us from the Brits who were raping and pillaging my country for 800 years. And my family had connections to him back then. All those people are dead but I always think of pride to know how much my family helped in the war of indepencence of Ireland.

Great picture, Raven. I honestly don't know much about the history in Ireland at that time to comment, but it's great to see someone post a picture, let alone having connections as well.
I'm encouraging everyone else to post pics too. I'm really curious to see everyone else's favourite powerful pictures.
Thanks, :coolspot:

The Boston Massacre, a major part of the American Revolution
One of the most famous photos in American history. The raising of the flag at Iwo Jima during the Pacific campaign of WWII. Three of those men died in combat shortly after this photo was taken.
The fall of the Berlin Wall.
A dark day indeed. The bombing of Hiroshima, the nuclear age is upon us.
One of the most chilling pictures I can think of. This is from the Hiroshima bombing, all that's left of the person who was sitting there is the shadow burned into the concrete steps.
EDIT: BTW, nice thread Shanny. I am always up for historical threads!

You know my 10th grade World History book neglected to even mention Crispus Attucks in the chapter covering the American Revolution. I mean his name wasn't in that chapter once.
That picture of Berlin Wall coming down was nice. Reminded me of what a great, resolute man Ronald Reagan was. Afterall, he won the Cold War for us.

This may not be a photo that impacted the world like Hiroshima or anything, but it's one of the most haunting photos I have ever seen.
Here is the story that goes along with it:
Tony O'Rahilly took a photograph of the burnt insides of Wem Hall which caught fire and burnt down in 1995.
While photographing the fire Tony O'Rahilly found after processing the photograph a figure of a girl standing on a landing amongst the burning embers. The girl is said to be that of Jane Churm, who accidentally started a fire in 1677, which destroyed the entire town. The girl has also been seen at two other fires on the property in 1835 and 1894.
Creepy eh? No one watching the fire saw the girl, but when the film was developed...
EDIT: Here is some more info I found on another site
I suppose the most famous cases we have been involved with are Wem and Belgrave Hall. Wem, a small village in Shropshire, hit the national (and international) headlines in 1995 when the Town Hall burnt down. Nothing too unusual there you may think. But not long after this, builders working in the ruins of the building soon began to report strange happenings, like white misty figures and unexplainable footprints. All of this generated a little local media interest, which persuaded a local man to come forward with a photograph he had taken on the night of the fire.
Photo of the Town Hall, Wem, Shropshire, during the fire. The photograph (left) is truly amazing. It’s nothing like the so-called ‘spirit’ photographs you come across on the Internet today. Most of those are easily explainable. What this photograph shows is a definite figure standing on the fire escape of the burning building. It looks like it may be a little girl. The Fire Brigade and photographic experts all agree, that due to the intense heat of the fire, it is impossible for any human being to be standing on the fire escape so close to the fire. As to what the figure is? Who can say with any certainty? I am fairly sure it is not a hoax. The photographic expert (a past president of the Royal Photographic Society) who we had examine the negative could find no evidence of fraud. At the end of the day, Parasearch were the only group to conduct a thorough scientific investigation of the case, and we still regard it as unexplained.

Nope, havent' seen any other pics. I love that pic though, it's the creepiest real ghost pic I can find. I have yet to come across any site that has tried to claim it's not real.

I've always liked this one. The Berlin wall getting knocked down. I don't even live and Europe, yet I find this picture represents a significant moment. That's all I got for now.

Yeah, the pic with the little girl is awesome. I told this woman that I work with about it, and it scared the hell out of her. So I printed it out and taped it to her desk.
