Hello, hello, and welcome to Gettin’ Heat. Each week I will take 2 topics, superstars or storylines, and give my opinions on them. Now, you may not like my opinions, so that’s why I’d love for you to give me your opinions on what I’ve written. If you have any comments, criticisms or just general bitching, please feel free to send them to the_complete_shot@hotmail.com.
Before I start this week’s column, I’d like to give a shout out to Phil “K-Dogg” Luongo. Without this man, WI would never have existed. If not for this man’s hard work and dedication, this site wouldn’t be so kick ass.
CHEAP PLUG ALERT: Be sure to check out our forums, where you can meet all of the WI employees, as well as various other posters from around the globe!
This week, I’m going to be giving my thoughts on the many issues surrounding Ric Flair’s recently published book. As well, I will be talking about former misused WWE talent.
By now, I’m sure that everyone is aware of the controversy surrounding Ric’s autobiography. People like Bret Hart and Mick Foley talking about how Flair bashed their talent and disrespected them. With all due respect to Mr. Hart and Mr. Foley, so what? People are entitled to their own opinions. If Ric Flair thinks that Bret Hart isn’t that good of a technical wrestler, it’s his opinion. If Ric Flair thinks that Mick Foley isn’t a real wrestler, it’s his opinion. It’s not like Flair’s a perfect guy. I’m sure people could think of many bad things to say about Flair. Why all the commotion about it? Both Hart and Foley bashed people in their books, yet nothing came of it. So why now? Why Flair’s book? Could it be jealousy, envy or perhaps it’s all to get publicity?
Obviously everyone knows about Michael Jackson’s alleged escapades in Neverland. But I bet some people aren’t aware that, around the same time this took place, he had released a Greatest Hits CD. Despite all the negative press, MJ was once again in the spotlight thus his CD’s sold well.
Now, think about this. What if Flair, Foley and Hart did this just to gain publicity? Why, you ask? Simple. None of the three individuals are in the spotlight. All three men were great years ago, but that has all changed. They’ve been shoved out of the way to have a new generation of stars. So, much like Michael Jackson, the three men got themselves back in the spotlight by creating controversy over Flair’s book. Of course, Internet fans began eating it up fully expecting this to be the real deal, which created a buzz about all three men, which enabled them to be in the spotlight once more.
Now, that’s just a theory but could you imagine if it were true? All this just to gain publicity and a few extra bucks? If it is all for publicity, I think those three men should be ashamed of themselves.
For those of you who are unaware, Rikishi was officially released from the WWE a few days ago. This adds to the many former superstars who have been released from the WWE over the years. However, some of the released superstars found it to be a blessing. Why? Just look at Jeff Jarrett, Ken Shamrock, Raven among others. All three men were released by the WWE and, as of this writing; all three have been a heavyweight champion.
Jarrett was released from the WWF after dropping the IC title to Chyna. Soon after Jarrett made his way to WCW, where he made an immediate impact. Not even a year after joining WCW, he became their World Champion, as well as the company’s top heel. Soon after WCW’s demise, the Jarrett’s gave birth to their very own federation. Needless to say, Jeff once again became Heavyweight Champion. Now, if Jarrett can be a heavyweight champion in WCW and TNA, then why did he never get passed IC champion in the WWF? Simple, the WWE misuses good talent.
Ken Shamrock is a similar story, however, it varies a bit from Jarrett’s. Shamrock actually got shots at the WWF title. He may have lost, but he still was in the main event for a few months. Soon after his main event push, Shamrock was sent into the IC title hunt until his feud with Steve Blackman. Even during that feud, he was still poorly misused. When TNA started, that was Shamrock’s golden opportunity. Shamrock became the first TNA champion. I ask again, if Shamrock can be a heavyweight champion in TNA then why did he never get passed IC champion in the WWF? Simple, the WWE misuses good talent.
Another classic example of misused talent is Raven. In ECW, and even WCW, he had title runs. Once signing with the WWF, however, he was sent to the crapper. The only title Raven ever held in the WWF was the, now defunct, Hardcore title. The only major thing Raven did in his tenure in the WWF was the Invasion angle, but even then he was misused. He was even involved in a “loser leaves Raw” match with Tommy Dreamer and was forced to wrestle on Heat after losing the match. Soon after, I’m sure much to Raven’s delight; he was released from the company. After being released, Raven signed with TNA where he was featured prominently and even won the TNA title. This is the last time I will ask this. If Raven is able to become the heavyweight champion in TNA and be featured every week, why is it that Raven got the **** end of the stick in the WWF? Simple, the WWE misuses good talent.
That’s all for this week. I hope you’ve all enjoyed reading what I’ve had to say. Please email me with your thoughts on this week’s column, as well as what you’d like to see in future columns.
Until next time,
