In a small room, an old man sits on the floor in the lotus position. His hands are gently resting in his lap and his eyes are closed. In front of him is a small altar with candles, lines of various sutras, and buddhist figures. He is mouthing something, but stops when he hears the door behind him open.
"Ah, Raelis."
A younger woman quietly walks in and takes a place beside him. They are silent for a few minutes before he speaks.
"Don't get too attached to the idea of being a champion of anything. Not only does attachment lead to suffering, but you've hardly begun this small word in this long passage of your life."
"I haven't even begun to fathom such a thing Master. I have a better mind than to let my ego get in my way. I know there is still a long road to go."
"It isn't your ego I'm worried about."
"I'm sure this is not the path you wanted for me, but it's the path I've chosen. I had hoped you'd be more supportive."
"Ha! Don't be like that now. You know I've always supported you. There is no question of that Raelis. You are strong and agile in both mind and body. You do not support yourself. You are too eager to prove yourself- as the first woman in this federation of wrestling; and in your first match of such; and to yourself and to me, and all this is distracting you from attaining concentration. Remember that's why you're here?"
"(Huffs) I've been meditating all week. Visualizing all week. Training all week. I am ready for this match against this man, this Elijah Edwards. I don't have to prove anything more than he does. As far as I'm concerned he's on the same level as I am, as he has yet to win a match! I don't even know-"
"Shushhh. Breathe in."
Both inhale deeply.
"Hold it in, fill your belly with warmth. Feel yourself fading."
She softens her rigid back and her face shows a calm come over her. Both exhale.
"Now, Elijah has not won a match yet. But he is still a trial. Nothing less, but nothing more. The state of your mind is your real opponent."
"Mmm. I see. You're right, I want to prove myself. Why wouldn't I though?"
"Would losing a match be so bad? Even your first? There will be more matches. Probably a lot, knowing you. You must take them one at a time or it will be detrimental to yourself."
"The point is the long run though."
"No, you don't see the point yet. In time, you will. How can I say it and not sound as a cliché? Eh, it isn't in the winning, or proving yourself."
"It is for me. Winning this match, and every match, will help me grow. I am confident in my abilities and I won't be nervous come the match. The rest of this week I shall work on my anticipation though. See? I'm growing already."
"Your suffering will come from this."
"I know. All of life is suffering though, and there's nothing else I'd rather suffer for."
The old man opens his eyes and smiles.
"You're heading toward something, dear Rae."
"I will have no doubt come the time. I will not disappoint you Master."
"You couldn't."
Both return to silent meditation.
