Bill Gates no longer world's richest

STOCKHOLM - Ingvar Kamprad, the Swede who founded furniture retail chain IKEA, has overtaken Microsoft's Bill Gates as the world's richest man, Swedish TV news has reported.

Citing next week's edition of the Swedish business weekly Veckans Affarer, public service SVT2 television said Kamprad, 77, has a personal fortune of 400 billion crowns ($NZ80.10 billion).

Gates' fortune is put at $US47 bilion ($NZ71.97 billion), according to the latest list of the world's rich in US Forbes magazine, SVT2 said.

Kamprad, known for frugal habits such as flying economy class, lives in Switzerland and no longer takes part in the daily running of IKEA, but has kept ownership of the company with more than 180 stores in over 30 countries in the family.

SVT2 said the dollar's slide against other currencies is the main reason why Kamprad has now overtaken Gates.

Wow, I can't believe the person who founded Ikea is richer than Bill Gates. It's hard to believe do to the amount of money Microsoft makes on every PC with Windows and Microsoft software in the world.

but,Gates will come back, because i have heard he is working on some ground breaking products, in the feilds of Movie Computer GFX,new game consoles (X BOX 2), and a brand new windows...wich is said to be a greataddition to the line, with never before seen features...

It would be great o be in a position where you could wake up one morningnd be worth $10 million dollars less than you were when you went to bed, just because of a minor hiccup on Wall Street. Then to wake up again the next morning and to made it back with interest. These guys' fortunes fluctuate daily, and on any given day one can be richer than the other

I think the creator of Walmart was the richest man in the world. When he died, his children split his fortune and now most of them are in the top ten richest people in the world. Can you imagine his wealth if he was still alive and his money was not split!!!

I was watching something on the news about him, he's 77 I believe and he drives old, old cars it's funny he has so much money but they say he plans on packing it all away. Hard to believe a guy that owns a furnisher company can make more money than the man the revolutionized computer software as we know it. Just think, this guy was probably some helpless guy in his 30s trying to get a job, and ends up with a business that later becomes worth Millions of dollars, it’s just shocking what some one with a little bit of courage and a small company can do in a few years. Amazing, simply amazing, I just hope at least some of it goes to charity, but it never does, not usually anyways.

He must have had an outragous amount of money if his children had split his wealth and they're on the top ten, it's just outstanding how much money people have and yet there are still helpless bumbs that can't make an honest living.

He drives an 11 year old Volvo and flies economy class everywhere. Apparently when spending money he asks himself "can Ikea customers afford this." Pretty cool outlook for a man that already has his money made, IMO
