View Full Version : The downfall of The Simpsons.
I'm about to say something that a few of you may disagree with - The Simpson's is no way near as funny as it used to be. It's still a decent show but the magic has been fading since 97. In England they show two Simpson's episodes each night, sometimes they show older ones, sometimes they show newer ones and sometimes they show and old one followed by a new one. When they do that the fall in quality really shows.
I'd say the Simpson's was at its peak from 93-97, since then it's just not as good. I don't know if it's got anything to do with it but the fall in quality happened after Phil Hartman’s death. The jokes are too obvious now, it’s turning into everything it used to mock, it's a ****ing institution. Don't get me wrong, it's still good but it used to be untouchable.
They still churn out the odd gem but most episodes rely on cheap humour now, Homer has become a caricature of himself if that's possible. Am I talking crap or do you agree?
Discuss.

Well, I will agree that the mid-seasons were funnier, but I still laugh my ass off at the current episodes.

Weaf, you're right. They show 2 episodes of the Simpsons daily here in St. Louis. The first one is from the 4th season and it's just downright hilarious. The second is from the 1rst-3rd season and they are funny too, just not as funny as some of the mid-seasons. I think that the Simpsons went down hill when they lost some of their writers who went on to bigger and better things. Conan O'Brien used to be a writer for the Simpsons and he has his own show now. Such is the way with all shows unfortunately.

Well the Simpsons are still funny to me. They were better in the past and many of the current episodes still make me laugh as well.

Sort of know where you're coming from here. There's now a formula which they stick with, so there's not so many of the sudden turns in plotting that there used to be.
Still funny though.

I agree...it's still a very funny show, but not quite what it once was. Still, I would take the Simpsons over any other show out there.

Yeh good point. When I was younger I used to enjoy watching the Simpsons so much that I would watch it every Sunday. Now it's just something to watch when I'm flipping through the channels.

I'll tell ya what the problem is-too many shows centering on Lisa (bleed, bitch, bleed! :brutal_01) They need to get back to centering on Homer by far the funniest character on the entire show. When the show first started, it was centered on Bart and it was funny. It's when they centered more on Homer that the show became hilarious.

Good point. I always thought that Homer was by far the funniest character next to Bart and Mr. Burns.

Personally I think that Ralph Wiggum has had his share of hilarious moments...but as far as centering the show around, yeah, I gotta go with Homer.
i've never found Mr Burns funny at all really, except for the UFO episode. I agree Ralph has had some excellent moments, so has Mo and Ned Flanders. I agree though that Homer is the best character in the show, and if it wasnt for him, there wouldn't be a show. Lisa=boring

Comic Book Guy, Mr. Burns and Otto are my favourite supporting characters.

Can anyone answer me though. Who's that guy who rarely appears and always says something on the lines of, "Yesss!!!!" and "Ohhhhh YESSSSSS!!!!!!". I always thought he was a tad bit funny.

Nah mate that's not him. I know who Disco Stu is (underrated), but this guy is different. He has weird eyes and a stupid moustache.

I know who you mean but I don't think he's got a name, he's just called the Yessssssss guy. He first appeared (I think) in Mayored to the Mob in Season 10 and his voice was done by Dan Castellaneta.
Homer: Uh, excuse me.
Usher: [bizarre, sycophantic voice] Yeeeees?
Homer: Do you have a table for the mayor?
Usher: Yeeees!
Homer: Why do you talk that way?
Usher: I had a strooooooke!
I got the quote from SNPP.com, it's a good reference guide to the show, it's probably got more info there.

Well, I still laugh my ass off when I watch it. You could tell the quality of the show had dwindled when the Halloween episodes (of the past few years) aired. Those shows use to be classics, but now they have lost there appeal. I'm still surprised that the show is still going.
