Smackdown's Current Biggest Rivalry
WWE Champion John "Bradshaw" Layfield and Latino Heat Eddie Guerrero
As many of us know these two men have been fighting back and forth ever since the draft began. But let me start from the beginning, let me remind every single one of you how all of this began. It all started when Vince McMahon announced on Raw that he wanted to stir things up and have a draft, telling all the fans that they were going to be new feuds going on in the WWE and so some extent he was absolutely correct. Alright, we head to Smackdown where Farooq got fired by Paul Heyman after he and Bradshaw lost a tag team match against Rikishi and Scotty 2 Hotty for the WWE Tag Team Titles. Bradshaw turned his back on Farooq because he wanted to keep his job. At this point Bradshaw had already wrote a book on how to make money and he has also been shown on business shows talking about the business world. The very next week on Smackdown Bradshaw came out wearing a suit and a cowboy hat. Bradshaw began to talk about how John "Bradshaw" Layfield will be making a big impact on Smackdown. Bradshaw starts talking about how he had fun drinking beer and beating up people but all of that never helped him suceed. JBL continued how rich he became by working hard and that all the fans were lazy fat people. We then go to the main event where Eddie Guerrero defended his WWE Title against Booker T, late in the match JBL came out and attacked Eddie Guerrero. At this point many of the fans, even people from WP began to complain on why in the hell is Bradshaw getting a WWE Championship Match, many of you said he sucks and he is a tag team contender not a WWE Championship contender. Week after week JBL made promos of illegal immigrants promothing himself like if he was running for president. We head to Judgment Day where JBL guaranteed a victory, now I was at Judgment Day and when he made the ring promo before the match began I couldn't even hear because of all the fans booing JBL, dam you fans, alright, sorry back to business. Surprising JBL won but he won by disqualification. Four more weeks passed with both men fighting back and forth at each others throats until finally John "Bradshaw" Layfield would be taking on Eddie Guerrero (again) at the Great American Bash for the WWE Championship Belt in a Texas Bull-Rope Match. And to the shock of the world John "Bradshaw" Layfield won the match becoming the new WWE Champion. At this point almost everyone began to complain (again) and how he got the WWE title too early and the WWE never gave him time to develop his character even though his mic skills improved week after week. And now two weeks from now John "Bradshaw" Layfield is now being forced to defend his WWE Championship Belt against Eddie Guerrero inside a Steel Cage Match.
Before I start talking about the rivalry let me give you my thoughts on both of these superstars and a mini-history of both these men from their careers just to give you a picture of how they both began their wrestling careers. And the first person I'am going to talk about is the current Smackdown WWE Champion, John "Bradshaw" Layfield. Now let me begin from the beginning, dun dun dun...Bradshaw signed with the WWF (at the time) and had a roughneck gimmick where he was known as Justin "Hawk" Bradshaw, managed by Uncle Cleetus, well this gimmick didn't work out so they decided to have him team up with Farooq with the Ministry, known as the Acolytes, later on to be known as the A.P.A. in which they would become a multi-time tag team champions. In late 2001 they made Bradshaw a single wrestler. And they proved it because at October 22, 2001 on Raw Bradshaw defeated The Hurricane to become the European Champion. On march 28, 2002 the A.P.A. are forced to split up after each were drafted to a different brand, farooq to smackdown bradshaw to raw. They later dropped Bradshaw to the Hardcore title division because the fans really didn't give a dam about Bradshaw alone, so on June 3, 2002 Bradshaw defeated Steven Richards to win the Hardcore title. They later dropped his title after a severe injury. He later came back to perform on house shows. On October 3, 2003 Bradshaw is expected to become a regular on "Cavuto on Business" every Saturday morning on the Fox News Network. On March 18, 2004, on smackdown, the A.P.A. lost to the Kish and S2H. Heyman fired Farooq and Bradshaw turned his back on his partner instead of supporting Farooq on his way out to keep his job. And then the birth of John "Bradshaw" Layfield began on March 25, 2004 on smackdown when JBL appeared with a suit and tie gimmick. He pretty much said how great he was and how better is. JBL would warn to make an impact on the same night and he did when he attacked Eddie Guerrero during his title match against Booker T. On April 8, 2004 Bradshaw won the first ever Kurt Angle Great American Award to become the # 1 contender for the WWE Championship Belt, at this point people really got pissed off because many of the internet wrestling fans hated to witness Bradshaw in the main event and hoped that Judgment Day was going to be the only ppv in which he was in the main event. On May 16, 2004, Judgment Day, JBL defeated Eddie Guerrero by disqualification so Eddie retains his belt. And on June 3, 2004 the fans found out that this feud will be heading to the Great American Bash after Bradshaw was giving a re-match in which he could choose the stipulation and he chose a Texas Bull-Rope Match. On June 5, 2004, a Live event in Munich, in an attempt to rget heat from the German crowd, JBL started doing the Nazi sign. These sorts of gestures are against the law in Germany and offended many of the fans in attendance. CNBC fired JBL as a financial analist after investigating the incident in Munich. Later in the week on Smackdown JBL made a powerful promo in the ring talking about what happened (well some of it anyways). And we head to the Great American Bash where John "Bradshaw" Layfield defeated Eddie Guerrero to become the WWE Champion for the first time in his career thanks to the GM of Smackdown Kurt Angle for showing the replay that JBL in fact touched the last turnbuckle so JBL did win fairly. Well this was just some of the highlights of John "Bradshaw" Layfield's career.
And now I'm going to talk about the former WWE Champion Latino Heat Eddie Guerrero. Eddie Guerrero signed with the WWE in late-early 1999-2000. On January 31, 2000, the Radicalz (Eddie Guerrero, Chris Benoit, Perry Saturn & Dean Malenko) shocked the wrestling world by showing up on Raw sitting in the front row. Eddie would be with the Radicalz for several months and he would eventually win the European Title as his first WWE Title he has won in his WWE career. Next Eddie Guerrero defeated Kurt Angle to retain the European Title on May 29, 2000 (imagine the people there didn't know that these two men would later highlight Wrestlemania 20 at Madison Square Garden). The WWE finally pushed Eddie to the IC Title, on September 4, 2004 on Raw taping, Eddie Guerrero defeated both Kurt Angle and Chyna to win the Intercontinental Title for the first time. But in the upcoming weeks Eddie Guerrero was taken off the road and put into a rehabilitation program do sort out some of his personal problems. In 2001 after a long rehab period, Eddie began to wreostling at WWF house shows again. On November 9, 2001 Eddie Guerrero was arrested on a DUI charge near his home in Land O'Lakes, Florida. In November 12, 2001 Eddie Guerrero was released by the WWF to deal with his personal problems. Eddie would late join an independant circuit. On december 1, 2001 in ICW Low Ki defeated Eddie Guerrero. But on March 2002 Eddie cancels his April tour with New Japan, in which he would come back to the WWE. On April 1, 2002 Eddie makes his surprise return by attacking Rob Van Dam. And so after settling his inner-demons he once again retained the Gold on April 21, 2002 by defeating RVD for the Intercontinental Title. On july 22, 2002, on Raw, Eddie got his first shot at WWE Championship Gold but lost to the Rock. He would then jump over to Smackdown along with Benoit. Eddie would later on team up with his nephew Chavo to become "Los Guerreros", they would go on to be a very entertaining and funny tag team. At Survivor Series November 17, 2002 Los Guerreros made there dream a reality by becoming the Tag Team Champions after they defeated Edge/Mysterio and Angle/Benoit in a triple thread eliminated tag team match. The WWE would then bumb Eddie to the U.S. Title Division when Eddie defeated Chris Benoit in July 27, 2003 at Vengeance. On August 28, 2004 Eddie turned into a monster babyface in El Paso. A family feud began with Eddie and Chavo after Eddie lost several consistent matches losing both tag team titles and his U.S. Title. After a tag team loss to the Bashams Chavo viciously attacked his uncle Eddie on January 8, 2004. At January 25, 2004 Eddie defeated Chavo. And on January 29, 2004, 4 days after the rumble Eddie won a 15 man battle royal to become the # 1 contender for the WWE Title. At this point half of the people in IOW loved the idea of Eddie getting a shot of the title and half hated it, me personally, I loved it. And after overcoming his demons, after years and years of wrestling, all those years he wrestled, it all payed off on February 15, 2004 when Eddie Guerrero defeated Brock Lesnar to become the WWE Champion for the first time in his career. But the fun wasn't over because at Wrestlemania 20 Eddie would beat the odds when he defeated Kurt Angle to retain the title. After two months of feuding with John "Bradshaw" Layfield because of Eddie's heritage and his motto "I Lie, I Cheat, I Steal," his dream was taken at the Great American Bash when he lost the WWE Title to John "Bradshaw" Layfield. And this was just some of the highlights on Eddie Guerrero's WWF/E career.
And now lets get to business, I'm going to discuss how this feud has progressed since the draft and what will be happening in the near future heading to Summerslam 2004 in Toronto Canada. Last thursday on Smackdown Eddie Guerrero announced that on his contract it read if he lost the title he would get a re-match and Eddie decided to get that re-match two weeks from last thursday against JBL for the WWE Title in a Steel Cage Match. Personally, and hopefully this match will be much better than the match they had at Judgment Day and at the GAB. So far this has turned out to be a very interested feud and an intense feud. Both men are trying to do their best. JBL winning the title was something he said he was ready to do, Eddie had all the pressure and this would make it easier for Eddie. But was JBL really ready? He only had this gimmick for alittle bit over 2 months and he's already the WWE Champion. Is that some sort of record? It took Brock Lesnar about 3-4 months before he became WWE Champion but Bradshaw just shattered that record. Is it that Smackdown doesn't have the main eventers for Eddie to feud or did they see this as an opportunity because of Bradshaw's business shows he has done in the past. This is JBL's best gimmick he real ever get and without hesitation the WWE gave him the strap. But is anyone tired of seeing these two men feud over and over again, for me, no. I love this feud and as many of us know it will probably continue on to Summerslam. Now this is my idea of what will happen. Two weeks from now in the steel cage match, when both men are out cold, tired, bleeding, exhausted, out comes the undertaker to prove how dominant he is. Tombstone to eddie, jbl covers him, its over, JBL wins. Next week Kurt announces that there is going to be a triple thread for the title, JBL vs Eddie vs Taker. And knowing the WWE they are going to give the strap to the Undertaker, this would lead Taker to feud with someone else, while Eddie will probably have a feud against the Big Show or Rob Van Dam and JBL, well hopefully he would feud with Cena for the United States Title.
But I'm going to give you a brief idea of how I really feel about this feud. For one, its keeping Smackdown up on his feet, both are trying to do the best job they can do with the stuff the WWE writers give them. And this steel cage match would be a perfect way for both men to show their true skills. Both these men have faced each other countless of times on pay per views and house shows, so they should have already got accustomed to each other. But again my prediction, JBL wins thanks to the Deadman. Because I have noticing, when JBL brought up his new gimmick, after the show ended taker would always come out and either tombstone or chokeslam JBL, and I thought to myself, why would they do this? And now I know, because at Summerslam JBL will be defending his belt against Eddie and the Undertaker. Alright, I'm done for now, I'm too tired to continue and hopefully you enjoyed another segment of the "Y2J Highlight Reel."
