They move slowly, crave human flesh and if they try to take over the world there's nothing you can do to stop them, apart from blow their heads off, of course.

Fortunately for us, zombies have been confined to scary movies and Michael Jackson videos but they could end up ruling the planet, scientists believe. And just like the movies, it is important the undead 'are dealt with quickly, or else we are all in trouble,' they concluded.

In their study, the researchers from the University of Ottawa and Carleton University posed a question: If there was to be a battle between zombies and the living, who would win?

They compiled a model of a zombie attack with infection rates based on the 'classical pop-culture zombie – slow-moving, cannibalistic, and undead', seen in movies such as Shaun Of The Dead, rather than the quicker versions in Danny Boyle's 28 Days Later.

'A zombie outbreak is likely to lead to the collapse of civilisation, unless it is dealt with quickly,' the experts wrote in their scientific paper.

'While aggressive quarantine may contain the epidemic, or a cure may lead to co-existence of humans and zombies, the most effective way to contain the rise of the undead is to hit hard and hit often,' they added.

Prof Neil Ferguson, who advises the British government on controlling the spread of swine flu, said the study had similarites with some infectious diseases.

'None of them actually cause large-scale death or disease but certainly there are some fungal infections which are difficult to eradicate,' he added.

You know we're in the midst of Silly Season when stories like this get printed (in this case in yesterday's Metro) - especially when the bods who did the research failed to read a copy of The Zombie Survival Guide between them...

Well Rabies is the closest you can get to the ''modern'' zombie reiteration, so if that disease evolves into a form that does not kill us but instead makes us like the animals that have it, then an ''infection'' type zombie is clearly pausible....Highly unlikely to ever happen imo.

If there is ever a zombie outbreak....I'll barricade myself in a mall :D ... After I killed any zombies in there :poke:

God I wish this would happen. I could use the excitement.

I'd prefer an outbreak of vampires over zombies, but either way I'm surprisingly prepared, all I lack is the generic black guy who would get killed first.

A zombie outbreak I'm prepared for, as I have both The Zombie Survival Guide and World War Z (although I have yet to get a machete, katana or Shaolin spade) - what I'm more worried about is a shibiro outbreak. There has to be a reason they still have the civil defence siren in my town...

Guys, every Zombie movie I've ever seen results in Zombie victory (even when it seems that protagonists escape - BAM! - They're straight back into trouble) whereas with vampires, they nearly always get it in the neck (or is that their victims - I forget) so, if there's a vote as to who you would rather see take over the world, vote vampire - you know it makes sense.

(Plus - plenty of sexy female vampires out there, but have you ever seen a hot zombie? I rest my case)

(God, I hope somebody finds a picture of a sexy zombie)

On the subject of human survival, I caught a bit of War of the Worlds on TV last night. Was the point of the movie to cheer on the Martians, given the fact all the human characters were highly irritating and beyond retarded?

Good effort but I think you're proving my point guys. I suppose Amy Whitehouse counts as a zombie as her heart has stopped on more than one occasion (if you believe the tabloids and, on this occasion, I'm prepared to let it slide) but hot she is not. (Also exhibit number one in my 'tattoos are just not sexy' debate)
