My buddy and I got in a discussion about John Hughes and how his movies spoke to a lot of different people. Then the conversation moved on to what were our top 10 movies from the 80's.

Here is my list: (In this order)

Die Hard
Back to the Future
Beverly Hills Cop
Rocky IV
Coming to America
Dead Poets Society
The Breakfast Club
Ferris Bueller's Day Off
Beetlejuice
Ghostbusters

I know there are so many other great movies from the 80's but I could watch those movies over and over (and I have) and they never get old. What's your top 10 movies from the 80's?

Great topic....even though it does show my age, lol. Okay, so here is my list.

1. DIE HARD: There is simply no other action movie that can compare to this movie. I own this and watch it at least five to ten times a year, and I never tire of it.

2. FAST TIMES AT RIDGEMONT HIGH: Pheobe Cates, coming out of the pool, looking hella hot, and then busting out of her bikini top is one of the best all time movie scenes. Ahhhhhhh. I was in lust with her. Sean Penn as Spicoli is a classic. Nuff said.

3. BREAKFAST CLUB: John Hughes best work...hands down. A film that, even with it being 24 years old, can still speak to teens.

4. BLADE RUNNER: A movie that has become a cult classic, and man, is it ever a true showing of just how good an actor Harrison Ford is and was.

5. WALL STREET: Gordon Gecko. Nuff said.

6. BACK TO THE FUTURE: How can you not love this movie? Think McFly....think!!!

7. SILVERADO: What a cast. And what a funny, smart and just flat out fun western.

8. PORKY'S: This movie makes me laugh so damn hard. I mean, the whole Lassie scene just friggin puts me in stitches.

9. BEVERLY HILLS COP: Makes me remember when Eddie Murphy was funny.

10. TRON: Yes. I love this movie, no matter how cheesy it is. It was a film that was way ahead of its' time.

Not too big on 80's film, but Die Hard was fantastic, though I thougt it was 1990, not late 80's. Scarface would be my number one.

Are you excited about Tron 2? Michael Sheen, Olivia Wilde and Jeff Bridges are the lead stars if I'm not mistaken.

Hands down, "Back to the Future" (and it's sequel/s).

Also enjoyed "The Breakfast Club"/"Coming to America"/"Feris Bueller's"/"Beetlejuice".

Has anyone seen "Howard the Duck"??

I had a huge collection of eighties movies on BETA before our BETA player broke. They were before VHS!!

Howard the Duck is one of my favorite movies of all times. Man I love me some movies!

I think I got one that almost no one will name, but I have loved it ever since I was a kid.

Dune.

Such a mind sucking movie. You have to watch it every second. If you blink, your fucked and you missed something. Its a pain in the ass AND awesome.
Fuck the 2000 remake. I have never even let it touch my eyes for fear that it might be so crap it would actually ruin my love of the 1984 awesometastic movie with spice!

You guys are all nuts! Nuts I tell you. You've forgotten one huge movie, well technically three, but the first is probably best for this topic.

INDIANA JONES!

Well, technically, that first one was called Raiders of the Lost Ark sir. Haha!

Well, you know what I mean! Saying Indiana Jones gives you more of an idea. You don't need me to spell things out, if you did and you relied on my dyslexic spelling, you'd be doomed!

In no particular order (and off the top of my head - if you see at least seven edit notices...)
Withnail & I
Full Metal Jacket
Blade Runner
The Shining
Back to the Future
Raiders of the Lost Ark
Die Hard
The Blues Brothers
Airplane!
Platoon

Well, technically, that first one was called Raiders of the Lost Ark sir. Haha!

And, technically, Temple of Doom was a crock of shit. Just without the "technically".

(Steps back in amazement at the mainstreamyness of D2KV's choices)
(At least we can agree that Tron was way ahead of Tron 2)

Anyway, the ten movies you have been desperately searching for are:

Altered States
Hellraiser
The Thing (Carpenter version)
This Is Spinal Tap
Prince of Darkness
The Ninth Configuration

and I'll allow Back to the Future, Scarface, Raiders of the Lost Ark and Blade Runner.

I always found Withnail to be very overrated - mildly amusing, but little more.
If you want a movie to show to people in 100 years what the eighties were like, Ferris Bueller is as good a choice as any.

Crap, knew I forgot one!

Withnail & I
Full Metal Jacket
Blade Runner
The Shining
Back to the Future
Raiders of the Lost Ark
Die Hard
Platoon
Scarface
Brazil

The 80s are weird that way: mainstream movies were, y'know, good.

I'm going to pull your head off, because I don't like your head.

ALIENS was a great film from the 80's as well.

Looks like I'm too late for this thread because you guys put up everything what I would have put up anyway :fit:

But I think theres a few not on this:

Empire Strikes Back
Return of the Jedi
The Untouchables
Terminator
Poltergeist
Exorcist (80's right? or 70's hmm)
Lean on Me

*deep breath*

OK, here we go:
Blue Velvet
Blade Runner
Full Metal Jacket
The Shining
Withnail & I
The Fly
Back to the Future
Die Hard
Kiki's Delivery Service
Brazil

Oh shit, no room for Scarface, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Videodrome, Platoon, Airplane!, The Blues Brothers, The Thing, The Naked Gun, Ferris Bueller, Monty Python's Meaning of Life...can I get dispensation to name a Top 20 before I go insane, please?

ALIENS was a great film from the 80's as well.

I rank the first much higher.

Yeah, Alien > Aliens, imo, and Godfather > 2 while we're at it, but Exorcist is definitely 1973

Probably one of the reasons why Withnail just doesn't do it is the fanboys that keep quoting bits at you (see also The Blues Brothers) It's OK, but it's just not one of the finest films available to humanity.

Oh crap, I'm going to have to try this again...

Blue Velvet
Blade Runner
Full Metal Jacket
The Shining
Withnail & I
The Fly
Back to the Future
Die Hard
Evil Dead 2
Brazil

How'd I manage to forget the first two Evil Dead films - and An American Werewolf in London, whilst I was at it? And the greatness that is Bad Taste!

Brief check: am I alone in thinking Hellraiser 2 was actually quite good?

legendaryken
08-17-2009, 12:37 PM
Yeah, I liked Hellraiser 2, though it couldn't beat 1 for the initial shock value of the visual style. Evil Dead 1 and 2 were excellent romps, but I'd be kidding myself if I said they were among the 10 best films of the eighties, and Bad Taste sells itself on the strength of living up to its title, but once you get beyond that, it's not much of a film really.
An American Werewolf in London........yeah, you could make a case for that. Better than The Fly, I reckon.

One thing you can certainly say about Bad Taste is that it's a rarity: a Peter Jackson film that doesn't go on for over three hours...

The Outsiders: Imagine a film with Rob Lowe, Tom Cruise, Matt Dillon, Patrick Swayze, Diane Lane...just to name a few. That is what this movie gave us. A compelling coming of age story. A film that is just a classic to me.

Where's the love for Das Boot?

(Well, you don't get too many opportunities to use that phrase, do you?)

Dead Ringers is another one that deserves a mention. I'm also surprised nobody's mentioned The Lost Boys yet, as that usually turns up in these threads.

AH CRAP!!! I forgot about Heathers!

Heathers was an awesome flick.

Surprised nobody has mentioned the first Nightmare on Elm Street. Introduced the world to Freddy Kreuger.
