Good news for fans of the Pitch Black and The Chronicles of Riddick -- a third movie may be on the way.
Riddick helmer David Twohy told ShockTillYourDrop that he and franchise star Vin Diesel have been talking regulary about a sequel.
He said that they had sketched out two ideas for a sequel, and that a studio had expressed an interest in the project if it became a PG-13 film. However, Twohy noted, "We don't want to do that anymore. That's one of the concessions we thought we made with The Chronicles of Riddick that we shouldn't have made."
Instead, he said they wanted to make the third movie more similar in tone to the franchise opener. "If we do go back to a third one, it will be focused again, hopefully again the same way that Pitch Black was, and we'll spend less money doing it. We're just trying to figure out how much less we can do it for because I don't think Vin is going to work for scale again."
Twohy said we should expect a Riddick-centred, scaled-back production that focuses on character dynamics again. "Was [Pitch Black] a creature feature? It had the hallmarks of it, the trappings of a creature movie, but it also had pretty good characters."
I have mixed reaction to this news, I'm happy because I like the Riddick franchise and I like both films for different reasons but I'm also disappointed because I fear they are just going to make a 3rd Riddick film just for the sake of making it.
There are a lot of different ways that David Twohy and Vin Diesel can go with the 3rd films storyline/plot, I just hope they go the right way. Overall I'm pumped over this news.

While Pitch Black was a far better film than the second one in terms of story and character, the second had better visuals. I enjoyed both films, and the third sounds promising on paper, but with films like these, the third one always usually ends up being worse than the second or 1st... Fingers crossed.

Pitch Black was one of those films that on paper sounds interesting, and in practice lived up to it - along with plenty of interesting dieas and visuals. Chronicles, on the other hand...well, the game was pretty good. Hopefully we don't just get a Pitch Black 2 - but also I hope we don't get an Alien: Resurrection out of this one.
Also, how did Vin Diesel's star crash and burn so fast?

LOL! For once, you and I agree. Chronicles of Riddick was so cheesy and goofy that I couldn't believe it came from the same franchise as Pitch Black- which was at least grounded in some sort of believability. Not much, but an army of Undead soldiers taking souls? Come on!
Vin Diesel's star crashed and burned because he was stupid. Instead of continuing to do what worked, he started making movies that he thought were good. It just happens that Vin has bad taste. He had a big hand in the backstory and lore for the Chronicles of Riddick. He should've participated in 2Fast 2Furious , made the sequel to XXX instead of leaving it to Ice Cube. While I'm sure that you LOVED those franchises (lol), at least he wouldn't have participated in a series of box office bombs in the meantime.
Edit: One other thing. At one point, Vin Diesel was one of the only viable action stars in Hollywood. Then along came guys like Ryan Reynolds, Christian Bale, Hugh Jackman, and Dwayne Johnson. Now, Vin has a lot of competition for roles he would have normally gotten.

Wasn't there something in Chronicle where it turned out Riddick was an invincible member of some alien race? How'd he forget to mention that in Pitch Black? "I'll just stand here being invincible, and you can walk to the ship at your own pace" Then agauin, as it seems to be on ITV2 every week, I'll just wait and see...
A Man Apart probably didn't help - just when he was hot after The Fast & The Furious and XXX, they dig up an older film that had been gathering dust, that had him crying in it. Hey, it was that or The Pacifier!

While Man Apart and Pacifier may not have been the best films for his career..I thought that those 2 films were decent at best. I quite liked Pacifier as Chazz says. But not doing XXX 2....Ice Cube was fucking annoying in that role.

Okay, the reason Vin did not do 2 Fast 2 Furious was because Rob Cohen, whom directed the first film in that series, took on XXX. Diesel decided to take the lead in that movie, which was a hit.
Now, Fast and Furious came out in 2001, followed by XXX in 2002, so Vin's star was shining bright. David Twohy, whom directed and wrote Pitch Black, was ready to do the second film. It is no secret that both he and Diesel have a good relationship, and that Vin loves the character of Riddick. When Pitch Black was made, no studio cared if it would appeal to the masses and become a mega hit. So, Vin and Twohy had no restrictions on what they could or couldn't do.
Now, with Twohy ready to do a sequel to Pitch Black, and with Vin's star shining bright, Vin decided to do a role he loved over doing another Fast or XXX film. I honestly don't blame him for chosing Riddick, because he simply is Riddick.
What sucked so bad is that Universal wanted a movie the kiddies could see. When, in reality, Riddick never should have been toned down. But that wasn't the only problem. The other problem was that Twohy seemed to not know how to handle a big budget film. The story was shakey, and it seemed that the film was completely relying on Diesel...and it failed. It isn't a bad film. But it sure as heck could have been tons better.
Anyways, make Riddick 3. I want it.

He also turn down the film Hitman, don't get me wrong, I'm happy he did because I liked Timothy Olyphant performance as Agent 47

Come to think of it, David Twohy also seemed to drop off the radar after Pitch Black: Below was a pretty good film but went straight to video/DVD, and he's only made two films since - Chronicles of Riddick and, a full five years later, The Perfect Getaway.
