According to Rockstar's Sam Houser (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sam_Houser), they are starting a new chapter of Max's life with the game. "This is Max as we've never seen him before, a few years older, more world-weary and cynical than ever." Since the last game, the press release states Max has left New York behind and has "drifted from bad to worse". The press release then goes on to say Max has been double-crossed in this new city and he is searching for the truth and a way out.[3] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Max_Payne_3#cite_note-rsw1-2)[2] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Max_Payne_3#cite_note-pressrelease-1). His appearance has also been drastically changed. He is bald, has grown a full beard and has gained a noticeable increase in weight. He also no longer wears his trademark leather jacket.
A recent issue of Game Informer (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Game_Informer) has revealed that the story is set 12 years after the last game. Payne has left the NYPD, and has moved to São Paulo (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/S%C3%A3o_Paulo), Brazil (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brazil) where he's taken up employment in the private security sector, working for a wealthy local family.

Alright, now that is not the Max Payne I know, what happened to the whole Noir setting which made the game great? But R* is making it right, obviously that'll make the game great...obviously.

Remember what I said in the thread about what type of game you would make if you could?

I'd make a noir game... And I wouldn't let Rockstar anywhere near it.
Yeah, now you know why.

They're doing it wrong. Plain and simple.

Re-inventing can be a good thing, especially for games with a concept that is dated or has now grown tiresome or if you are Nintendo and your target audience have a attention span that's short enough for them to forget what the previous installment was even like... But Max Payne is quite simply not one of these games and in this case re-inventing was simply a horrible, horrible mistake.

This is gonna hurt Rock* bad. Even if its a damn amazing game (which it won't be), it still won't be a Max Payne game so no one is gonna be happy about it. They are pretty much doomed to fail. (And rightfully so for ruining a brilliant and original game concept)

Lol, oh thats the reference? I thought you were talking about the other R* game.. L.A Noire, :D

^ Agree with you on Max Payne not needing a whole new reinvention.

I actually disagree and I am excited about the direction this series has taken. After the last installment I found the whole dark New York scene a little boring.

One thing I wouldn't have done was send his ass to Brazil because to me it really doesn't make any sense to send him there. I would have had him go to either California or Florida working as a bartender or security guard.

Honestly, Max Payne 2 wasn't all that great. And, IMO, Rockstar saw this and decided that maybe re-inventing it would be a good idea. Two things work for this game.

(1). It has been several years since Part 2, and while those who played the original and the sequel will like how the old games felt, there is a whole new generation of players who probably don't.

(2). Games evolve over time (RE4 anyone), and so do characters. Look at Solid Snake. He got older, but while he did evolve, he never lost his status. Payne is not on the level that SS is, but still, my point is that Rockstar probably wanted to see Max change. To show us how life has been on him. It gives realism to Max, and I do like this idea. Max has become a new man...for better or for worse.

Yeah, Max has his trademarks. But I can see where Rockstar is going with this. Personally, becaue I didn't much care for the sequel, I like this idea. Looks more edgier to me.
