View Full Version : The Beatles or Elvis?
Beatles for me. While I respect Elvis's achievements and legacy as an artist, I simply couldn't enjoy his music, it all sounds very much the same to me. With The Beatles, there was a wide range of sounds, many of them totally new and innovative. The transition from post 50's skiffle group -to- clean cut pop band -to- Late 60's Psychadelic phase, in only eight years is staggering, and prodouced so many great songs and albums that had their own distinct sound and "feel".
(Plus, they gave the world the greatest album ever in Sgt. Peppers, and the most succesful musician of all time in Sir Paul ;) )

I like Elvis so much more than I like the Beatles, but the Beatles are the better band of all time. They are the greatest band of all time. They have followed trends, whether they are sophisticated young men singing about love and rock and roll or whether you look back and see the Marijuana/Acid days. Elvis just has more of an impact with me (being better because he's American) and I have to pick him because of it.
I never liked Elvis or his music, but I love the Beatles.

It is impossible to compare Elvis and The Beatles. They are so different.
One could compare Elvis to maybe Jerry Lee Lewis, or say Johnny Cash or even Little Richard, but as with The Beatles it is apples and oranges.
With the Beatles you can compare them with The Stones or The Who.
I'll answer the question anyways, personally and popularity wise.
If i went with my musical taste it would definitely be The Beatles.
But if i had to choose who is the all time greatest it would be Elvis. There are so many impersonators, memorabilia, everyone knows Elvis, he brought Rock and Roll to the masses (Is NOT the King nor creator of Rock and Roll), but he is in the worlds eyes better than The Beatles....
PS. I'm a little messed up right now.

Did Elvis even write his own songs? I don't think he did... He was a great singer and a brilliant entertainer that's for sure, one of the best to ever live but I'd probably say the Beatles were better overall artists because they actually crafted their own work... That and I like more Beatles songs than I do Elvis songs. I guess I'd go with the Beatles.
Not to say I don't like a bit of Elvis. I like quite alot of his earlier Rock N Roll stuff. (The love ballads never did it for me)
but he is in the worlds eyes better than The Beatles....
I'd deffinatley say that is debateable. The Beatles sold more records than Elvis for one.

Yeah, apples and oranges. Elvis didn't write his music and, apart from the very beginning, was only partly responsible for his 'sound'. His ratio of crap/good stuff is also fairly woeful and I doubt if he made a film as enjoyable as 'Help'. Having said that, he was responsible for some great singles in his early career and largely responsible for the seismic shift away from crooners/straight C&W/swing/jazz etc towards a more poppy version of R&B/Rock and Roll that happened in the 1950s. Even in the Vegas years he could still produce a great single - 'American Trilogy', 'In The Ghetto'. Plus, in terms of total numbers sold/number of hit records, he makes Michael Jackson look like Miss Nicaragua (sorry, Nic, you're still a long way from that platinum album!)
The Beatles, on the other hand, are The Beatles. I don't think we need any further explanation.

I also think that if you got together the most successful bands of the times since both groups and asked them the question "Who has been the biggest influence on you?", Beatles Would come up more often than Elvis.

Is there not some sort of relief agency that flies in aid in these circumstances? You're 23, English and have never heard the Beatles????? There's some illiterate 5 year old Papua New Guineans that consider Paul McCartney a God you realise.
You are pulling my leg. I refuse to believe your previous post. Never heard 'I Want To Hold Your Hand' 'A Hard Day's Night' ' Yesterday' 'Help' 'Day Tripper' 'Yellow Submarine' 'Strawberry Fields Forever' 'All You Need Is Love' 'Hey Jude' or 'Let It Be'? (10 most famous, I reckon) Boy, you've got some research into pop history to do.

I agree with Ken in that I find it very hard to believe that you've never heard a Beatles song. Even if you were unaware of it, you MUST have heard at least one Beatles song in your entire life.
If nothing else... Hey Jude. You MUST have heard Hey Jude before.
If, for some utterly unthinkable reason, the start doesn't jog any memories then skip to 3.50

I thought i said knowingly, i most likely have heard one but dont know it. I seem to recall a piss take of Yellow Submarine in the Simpsons so if it used the same song just messed with the vid then i most likely have.

Have to laugh at this article doing the rounds...
WrestleMania goes head-to-head with Beatlemania tonight in Glendale, with the legendary Paul McCartney blowing the dust off any number of his favorite moments with the act you've known for all these years at Jobing.com Arena, while across the way, large men in tights will engage in heated battle scenes.
To mark this coincidence, the World Wrestling Entertainment Superstars told us their favorite Beatles songs. Here's what they had to say.
Chris Jericho: "The Beatles are my favorite band of all time. I will be going to the McCartney show after WrestleMania!" Favorite song: "I Want You (She's so Heavy)."
John Cena: "Come Together."
Shawn Michaels: "Let It Be."
Randy Orton: "Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds."
Edge: "A Day in the Life." "To me," he says, "they're singing a movie, and it's a point/counterpoint between Lennon and McCartney. They both have a character in the song."
Cody Rhodes: "Back in the U.S.S.R."
Sheamus: "Hey Jude." "It's been my favorite song since I was a kid," he says.
Dolph Ziggler: "Hey Jude."
Santino Morella: "I Want to Hold Your Hand."
Evan Bourne: "With a Little Help From My Friends."
John Morrison: "Yellow Submarine."
Kelly Kelly: "Hey Jude."
Natalya: "In My Life."
Kofi Kingston: "Let It Be."
MVP: "Strawberry Fields Forever."
Brie Bella: "All You Need Is Love."
Nikki Bella: "Yesterday."
CM Punk: "I hate the Beatles. You can quote me!"
JoMo loses a hell of a lot of kudos...

It's hard to pick a favorite beatle song... But I think if I had to choose, it'll probably be Helter Skelter or Lucy in the sky with diamonds.
What about perhaps Beatles vs Pink Floyd?
Pink Floyd all the way no question.

Am I the only person on earth who thinks Tomorrow Never Knows is the best Beatles song by a country mile?
If we have The Beatles vs Elvis, is the logical counter argument The Rolling Stones vs Buddy Holly, or would that be the most one-sided victory in human history?

Not by a country mile, but there's an argument to be made for it. Note: I listed the ten most famous, not the ten best. Here's my list
Tomorrow Never Knows
Helter Skelter
For No One
A Day in the Life
Hey Jude
I am the Walrus
We Can Work It Out
Twist and Shout (yeah, I know they didn't write it)
Rain
Eleanor Rigby
I could do another 10 just as good though

Sorry Pink Floyd has no chance against Beatles, I'm sorry but am I the only one who things half their catalog is garbage? Including The Wall.
Best Beatles Song?
Something
Tomorrow Never Knows
Long, Long, Long
Rain
I Want You (She's So Heavy)
Two of Us
The Fool on the Hill
And Your Birds Can Sing
All could be considered the best in my mind, but Tomorrow Never Knows is pretty amazing, a would suggest the Tomorrow Never Knows/Within Without You remix on the Love Album, it's amazing.
