Live!
December 28th, 2008

Hmm another Live show, and I had a free ticket. Oh where are my manners, I'm Fred, and I'm here to check out WPW.
Lance Burkhart v Frank, The American Ninja
So the next match was some debuting guy called Lance Burkehart or something like that, against Frank the American Ninja!! Lance came to the ring first, and waited in the centre of the ring for Frank to come out, the lights went out, and when they came back on, Lance looked confused, Frank was nowhere to be seen!! A few of us noticed that Frank was hanging upside down from the ceiling, but somehow the "he's hanging from the ceiling" chants didn't quite get through... I kind of expect that Frank was hanging from there the entire night, though. Anyway, the lights went out again, and when they came back on, Frank was standing behind Lance. The referee rang the bell, and Lance turned around, and I think he got a bit of a fright...I thought he was meant to be "hardcore"? Anyway the match was back and fourth for a few minutes before Lance took control, he seemed to have Frank exactly where he wanted him. Lance signalled for the end of the match, but when he went to hit Frank with it, he did some awesome ninja move that I can't even begin to describe, before nailing Lance with the Ninja Death Strike (Mongolian chop) which led to the win!
Blake Baker v Sal Karver
Not a bad match, not a bad match at all. It appeared that the Brooke never did come to ring side during this match, which gained collective groans of the male support. Sal started out much slower today, perhaps chalk that one down to his last brutal match. The pace seemed to suit Blake fine though as he went on the offensive with a variety of strikes and punches to the mid area of Sal. Sal was slow to cover and the unpredictability of the strikes meant each one seemed to hit. Not one to be outdone, Sal used the ropes tactically to gain a small breather and started to come on stronger moving to catch one of Blake’s strikes and reversing it into a hammer lock. Yes we had a few hammerlock exchanges here which turned into sleeper exchanges. Sal’s experience slowly began to shine through as he kept Blake grounded through a variety of submission holds. Sal even managed to lock in a single legged Boston crab which almost caused an early submission. Blake managed to reach the ropes, clinging on for dear life as Sal decided to go top rope. Blake managed to get up quickly though and was up top at the same time as Sal bringing a top rope hip toss to the match. Sal didn’t kick out but his foot got to the ropes in time to break the pin. Blake seemed a little pissed off as he began dragging Sal out of the way, but once again experience from Sal showed as he quickly grabbed Blake pulling him into a very impressive pin. Blake couldn’t kick out for the three and seemed to look surprised at it. Seemed like he was 6 microseconds too late or something.
Jason Silver v Trent James
Now just as Trent came out he stared at the retreating Sal, they seemed to exchange a few words about something. I don’t know what but I’m sure it’s nothing serious, I mean a brawl didn’t break out in fact Sal laughed and pointed to where he kept the Florida title. Either way, Silver was getting impatient waiting for Trent, pointing out he was more importance since he was the Canada champion. Mind when was that thing last defended. Well another man from the same match as Sal, but seemed to be feeling better. Mind, he started off badly as Silver out of nowhere dived over the top rope into Trent before the bell rang. Good job the bell didn’t ring, I doubt either was in before ten, but the bell rang as Trent slid into the ring. Silver was up first and just picking his punches carefully, not giving Trent a chance to stand properly let alone get a counter attack going. After about the ninth punch, Trent managed to catch one giving himself the time to spring up properly he showed some nice flowing movement as he even managed to kick Silver in the head knocking the champ off balance. Trent followed up with some more punches and even a lariat flooring Silver. Wasn’t a three count to the cheers of the fans. Trent kept up his advantage inside the ring throwing in a few power moves to keep Silver floored. Poor Silver, mind he did manage to trip up Trent to buy a second. It seemed to be enough to allow both men time to get up to their feet. Trent was whipped into the corner as Silver came in full charge although Trent had it scouted managing a drop toe hold to make Silver go face first into the corner. It was annoying that there was no blood, mind you the match continued with a sweet fisherman suplex from Trent which almost scored the win but it wasn’t to be. From here the match was as unpredictable as the lottery with high impact moves flying in. The pick of the bunch were a tilt a whirl slam from Silver, then his top rope elbow miss. Trent couldn’t pick up the win there, but just as Silver was gaining the upper hand, looking for Mindfreaked, he did manage to have Trent in the fireman’s carry, but Trent managed to slide off and Silver was in a place I didn’t want to be… Trent got him into a Styles Clash position, Sensory Overload as he calls it, and Silver was out for 3. Trent managed to get up and signalled that he was better than the Canadian division.
The Killing Joke v Brent Richards & Jackson Strong (The Genuine Articles)
Seriously, this match.. Just… please… fine. I kind of hoped to see a squash match here, something like Killing Joke having the G.A strapped to a train to Gladstone, but alas this wasn’t the case. Since it was a handicap match the rules were announced telling us that Killing Joke had to keep one hand on the tag rope at all times. Few laughs for the messed up cards there, Joke looked less than impressed, since he cheats, not the other guys. Anyways, after the blunder of the night so to speak. The G.A’s decided to have Strong start against the champ. KJ being the superb amazing.. Oi stop that. Anyways, KJ stared off much stronger, every test of strength, every hold, every move seemed to be coming from him. Given it wasn’t as if Strong was doing anything wrong either, but rather he was just being unlucky. Joke made the first real move of the match after a neat combination bringing Strong to his knees, followed with a nasty knee to the head, looked as if Strong was out cold there and I thought that if it was one on one it would have been over. Strong kicked out at two, rubbing his head. Joke being the amazing champion (so he claims) let Strong tag out to Richards. Once again it seemed as if Joke was the best man in the ring, with Richards being a narrow second, but the tides turned when Joke mistimed a clothesline letting Richards in with some rights of his own. Richards began to mount a serious counter attack, even taking Joke down with a running forearm smash. Richards then went to check on Strong, giving Joke a chance to do the most disgusting thing ever… yes he removed the boot. Richards turned back to Joke and charged. Joke managed to move, accidentally catching Richards with his boot, or so he claimed. Mind it did look like an accident and the ref never saw it. Richards slumped into the corner as Joke nodded to the disgust of the fans, using his modified mandible claw move… I refuse to go into detail about it. Joke drags Richards across for a pin, it’s over.. Wait Strong out of nowhere, leg drop (out of his partners textbook) breaking up the count. Despite being the illegal man, Strong remains on Joke, hauling him up into about four different suplexes letting Richards recover. Richards pushes Joke around as ref finally gets to Strong. Richards looks to set up for the muscle buster, runs out to the middle of the ring with Joke in toe and…. Thumb to the eye somehow. Richards drops Joke who goes for a quick roll up holding the tights as it were. 2 count again, broken by Strong. Strong gets floored for his assistance, but Richards with a mirrored copy of the roll up, Strong dives in as well so both men are holding Joke down. Ref sick of this calls for the three count, a little quickly and this is over. GA with the win here, although in rather strange circumstances, and that ref.. man I want to hit him myself.
Dan Murph v Blade LaVigne
Main Event time, everyone around also seemed to be psyched up for this. Both men in this match seem to be WPW regulars, which is why this is the Main Event. Blade making his return as well. Seemed to a massive returning party set out, full red carpet and suit stuff, mind I didn’t know any of those suited guys celebrating Blades return and I can promise there was no mega hot woman there either. Anyways, Blade came out like he was supposed to be cheered, like the war was over or something, mind one idiot next to me started chanting which Blade heard, kind of looked like the super dragon fan on youtube. The Murphs came out second for the match, Snr telling Jr. to concentrate and the younger did look pretty focussed. Murph really took in to Blade early, the difference in strength clearly evident. Blade did try to match Murphs power and really couldn’t match it. Murph took Blade over his head in a release suplex early but Blade did show a little sparks of brilliance during the match, a few well placed shots and a big DDT. It wasn’t enough to put Murph. Blade deciding to be big stalked Murph waiting for him to get up. As Murph got up Blade tried to lift him up into a fireman’s carry. It looked suspicious to me that Blade was trying to copy someone, but before my suspicions could be confirmed, Murph battled out and tossed Blade head first into the turnbuckle with some force. Hell even I winced. Murph picked Blade up like a doll lifting him onto his shoulders and delivered a big Cyclone. That there had to be it, but Murph wasn’t done. Looked like he wanted to send a message as he locked in the Black Death. Blade tapped and I don’t blame him. Murph stood up, not even celebrating as if his win was a formality.
Now I get to go home and start on my diet, which is why I'm in a foul mood, but WPW is worth checking out.
