Our 40th President who is best remembered for having a hand in ending the Cold War with a plea to Mikhail Gorbachev to tear the wall separating East and West Berlin. He was the oldest President elected and the oldest ex-presidents, in short he will be missed.

I wasn't born yet whenever Reagan was president so I can't say much about him. But what I have read about him in history, he seemed like a bad president. But R.I.P Mr. Reagan. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family.

It was sad to hear about his passing. I always liked Reagan mostly because of his character. He was a Republican and was for the most part conservative on many issues (which is how I am. I'm both conservative and Republican). His greatest accomplishment was helping to end the Cold War. He was more of a foreign affairs President.

MY GOD!
Yes, I am still a little shocked that Ronald Reagan is dead, but this crap all over the news has to end. I mean, Jesus. As far as I could tell, Reagan's death got more coverage that the 60 anniversary of D-Day. And because the old geezer finally died, conservatives will lose their minds. I think it was on C-Span that they read excerpts from an article where conservatives wanted to put Reagan on a coin and give him a memorial in Washington, D.C. As PK said, RONALD REAGAN IS SCUM. And in my book, he's along the lines of 50 Cent and countless other rappers like Master P.
I have to admit, Reagan was a pretty funny guy. I watched his speech at the RNC Convention in '92 and he had me going, but if that's the case, why don't we make Supes president in 20 years or so. Ronald Reagan's politics reaked the high heaven and he's the reason why we're in the mess we are today. Granted, liberals and Democrats praise, worship, and exaggerate John F. Kennedy to no end, but it was a little easier I have to admit. They are going all out for Reagan and lying their asses off. Ronald Reagan was not overly popular and he had Alzheimer's in office. He screwed the working class and poor, and had he not been elected, there's a pretty good chance we wouldn't have this **** tard G.W. Bush in the White House. Yes, Reagan had a funny, warm personality (even though it may have been 'cause he was losing his mind), but this world would be different a little better had Reagan never been elected. His death is not a national tragedy, and excuse me for not caring as much.

Peoples King: Hello? You're ****ing 16 years old, so what the hell do you know? Shut the hell up and post to things that you actually know something about!!
Reagan, while others may not agree with what he did, he was actually a very good president. If it hadn't been for him, the Cold War might have shifted power back to Russia. Like Chazz said, he was more of a foreign affairs President, but he still did many great things for the United States(granted the national debt is at it's highest, but no other presidents have tried to even try to change that! *cough* Bush *cough*!
My thoughts and prayers go out to the Reagan and Davis' families. He was a great President and a great man! :)

I don't even care that its PK you're talking about, because he can come and defend himself. My thing is its wrong and ignorant to blast him for his age. Why? Well there's a thing called school, or how about history?
The fact is in today's modern era anyone of any age can read thoroughly on subjects of history and draw his or her own opinion. I have a question for you: Did you think Adolf Hitler was a bad man? But wait, you're only 22 years old and your opinion means nothing. Because of your age Rachel, to quote the Rock, "I wipe a monkey's left testicle with what you think."
As far as Reagan's winning the Cold War (I know you didn't go that far), its a farce. The fact is the Soviet Union was on the road to demise since the 1970s. I'd even go so far as to say Richard M. Nixon had more to do with ending the Cold War than Reagan. Hell, I'll even say gladly that Kennedy had a bigger impact than Reagan did, at the wall, since conservatives love to rant and rave about his speech there.
You say Reagan was more of a foreign affairs president. Pfffffff. Ronald Reagan was and is today an international joke. I see your saying that as an excuse for his piss poor job on the domestic front. The "War on Drugs" was laughable. (Funny thing about: Nancy pushed this to the heavens because she wanted to smooth over criticisms about her drive to become a Jackie O-like First Lady; it was a bad imitation in short).
Ronald Reagan may have been a good-hearted man like Jimmy Carter, but he was a lousy president. But you know what, it'd be wrong to compare Reagan to Carter. Carter wanted to actually help this nation, but he was a sorry, unskilled politician and had trouble getting anything done. Reagan on the other hand intentionally allowed big business to butt **** the working class and poor.
Many say that after the 60s and the 70s, the 80s and 90s were about responsibility. I say like Reagan, that's a joke.

OMG! Did you just put down the People's King? Hah, that was some funny stuff, but I have to admit that I agree with you. Not trying to dog you PK (you know your my boy and all), but Rachel just owned you.
Let me try to put his in a way for all to understand. Reagan had the highest approval rating of any President since the popularity polls began. Even to this day, the guy is still loved and respected. That is why his story is all over the news. I remember when Princess Diana was killed, and her story dominated the news for at least a week. I don't like the fact that is happens this way, but that is why it is all over the news.
Now, about his Presidential term. Well, first of all, Reagan inherited a lot of debt from Jimmy Carter. I'm not saying Reagan helped the deficit, because he didn't. But, he never really tried to in the first place. His presidency was based on one thing: foreign policy. He was more concerned with Russia and Libya. His main goal was to end the Cold War, and he did. You may not agree with him choosing to concern himself with foreign affairs, but at that point in time America as a country was more focused on that than it was with itself. It wasn't until Bush Sr. got elected and made a promise he should not have made ("Read my lips. No new taxes".) that American's became concerned about the budget deficit. I feel had the Gulf War never have happened, that Bush Sr. would've really focused his presidency on the budget. Clinton walks in and knows that American's want something done about the deficit. He appeals to that and makes it his platform. He won.
So, in walks Clinton and he happens to be President when the Internet boom hits. To this day, people feel that Clinton was a great President, and there are things that he did that were good. But, there is no way that Clinton could have seen that the Internet would take off like it did. And, here is something else that many people don't know. While Clinton was in office, he actually taxed us more than Bush or Reagan ever did. The thing was, the deficit was dwindling so people didn't take the time to notice what Bill had done.
Bush Jr. walks in, and has two big blows. One was the internet bubble burst and the other was 9/11. Like his daddy, Bush had to respond to terrorist. If you lok back to Bush's platform when he was running in 2000, Bush's main objective was to reduce the deficit, help the teahcer's (which most in the Republican party were against, and lower taxes). 9/11 changed all that.
So, how does this all tie in with Reagan? Well, first I just wanted people to see that many things Reagan is blamed for really aren't all his fault. Was he a great President? To me, he was. I can't think of anybody else who could have consoled America after the Challenger explosion. I can think of nobody else who would have been brave enough to try and succeed in ending the Cold War. Did he have his faults? Yes he did. Name me one president who doesn't.
Many of you don't like Bush Jr., and I can understand why. But, to me, with what he has been dealt with, I honestly feel he has done a good job. Reagan falls into that catagory with me.

I have no idea about this Reagan guy but I will say this I 100% agree with what you just said, you can't put PK down because of his age if his read and learned about it and fully understands about it then he has the right to express his opinion.

Man, I knew that someone would say something about that "your my boy" comment. :D Nah, actually, for a 16 year old, PK has his head on shoulders and is very intelligent (sometimes) with his posts. I was only kidding about the "owned part".
I don't mind PK having his own opinion about Reagan, as long as it is one that is based solely on what he has read and how he feels. The fact that he is 16 and lives in Ireland does not mean he can't form an opinion about something. In that respect, WWECHICK was wrong.
I would ask the question as to why would someone like PK who lives in Ireland concern himself with our history? I'm pretty sure that they don't focus on our history over there. I mean, I would feel that there is some American history taught in other countries, but how accurate is it? PK, help me out here.
Peoples King

I wouldnt say I concern myself with America's history but more of the worlds history. In Ireland we study modern history and so, inevitabley, we end up studying parts of America's history as it is the worlds super-power. Personally however I am interested in American politics of the 20th Century pretty much from the Kennedy era right through to today. I like to get a world view rather then just an internal view of Ireland and Europe. I think I am lucky in that my family is one that likes to discuss such issues as the war on Iraq etc.
Chazz
06-08-2004, 02:09 AM
And see, that is good that you and your family do discuss those kinds of topics. At least you are an informed person who bases his decision on things he has learned. Most people form an opinion through hearsay.
One problem here in America is that we don't learn what is going on in other countries. Which is odd considering that people from these other countries take time to learn about us. I try my best to stay informed about other cultures and countries. And CNN or Fox News aint always the best place to learn from.
