All right, so Matt and I (vayne303) were cruising through the local Best Buy today looking for a wrestling DVD to watch this afternoon to kill some time until our girls got off work. Squeezed in between last years Summerslam and Unforgiven was a ROH DVD for $9.99. After having Akira tell me a few months ago that if I ever saw a Ring of Honor DVD I should buy it, we went ahead and picked it up.
OH MY GOODNESS. We only got through half of the thing but it satisfied a cruiserweight itch of mine that the WWE has never been able to scratch. The DVD's production quality was poor, but the matches were excellent. In particular, there was a six man elimination match featuring The Amazing Red, Quiet Storm, The Maximo brothers, Brian XL and...ah damn, I can't remember who else was in it for some reason...I know Mikey Whipwreck was the referee. Anyway, the match was awesome...I have written in my columns time and again that the backbone of cruiserweight wrestling is multiple participant matches, but the WWE never really utilizes this. ROH really let these guys go at it...the highlight for me was when The Maximo bros busted out a top rope finisher called "The Spanish Fly"...it's a sort of double suplex off the top rope, but both brothers flip their opponent all the way over 180 degrees...bah, that description doesn't really do the move justice...let's just say it's freaking awesome. The Amazing Red definetely lived up to his name as well. He had two matches on the show, and busted out "Yang Time", Jimmy Yang's Corkscrew splash, except he added an extra rotation to it and turned it into a crazy leg drop. He then finished off the match with a STANDING shooting star press, which was impressive (although Brian XL later busted out a shooting star press standing on his opponent's chest).
Anyway, we didn't even get around to the final three matches on the card, one of which was Eddie Guerrero vs. Super Crazy!
I can't wait to watch the rest of it. If nothing else, ROH definetely provides the cruiserweight action that the WWE is sorely missing. I also noticed that they take a lot of WWE moves and add an extra twist to them, which adds an element of surprise for anyone that is used to WWE style wrestling.
Matt and I both said on several occasions "There is no reason why the WWE hasn't signed some of these guys". They are just that good!
