View Full Version : WPW Adventure Game Poll

This is a poll about an upcoming game that is in the early stages of development, but is something that can be produced rather quickly, and is something I actually have experience doing, unlike everything else we've tried (including running an e-fed itself!).

I'm going over a few different ideas in my mind of a new pet-project for WPW. Fantasy and Baseball are fun for what they're worth, Team Warfare is a blast, but this will be a different kind of project. It'll be a game which doesn't really revolve around Live or TNT at all, and is really a stand-alone game just custom-warped in a WPW environment. Even if you're not an active competitor in WPW, it's something you could get into if you're interested.

So keeping this short and sweet without too many details, I'm going to go with one of a few options for an external project, but will only have time to run 1 so I want to see what has the most interest.

In this project, which is tentitivly named WPW Adventure Game, I plan to run "adventures" of sorts that are based in a fantasy type envornment, but with a wrestling twist to it. It'll be somewhat similar to how AD&D games play out, but with my own twist on things to make them less confusing, not as long of sessions (Sorry, I don't have 6 hours per session to play, and neither should you!), and with my own custom rule set.

Long before I came to wrestling boards I used to run these "adventures" and had great sucess doing them in a fantasy set world. People loved going on them, I loved running them, and overall they were a fun way to spend an hour or two. They are strictly text games, using dice rolls, and are best played in an AIM chat room. Through games, you could earn WPW store points, turmoil cards, and most importantly have fun trying something new.

So the question is, if I choose this as my external WPW project, would you play?

So...WPW Pokemon?

If anything, I'd say it's more like WPW AD&D. I've never played Pokemon in great length so I can't comment, but I think Pokemon being an actual handheld game is a completely different format.

It's kind of unique in it's own way though, like all my creations are, because it'll have Ad&D roots, but greatly stray from the game, include wrestling in it obviously, and whatever else I think of later.

I was actually joking about the Pokemon comment.

I've never played Dungeons & Dragons so I have no idea how this is gonna work. I say go for it but seeing as alot of the people in this thread don't know how it is going to work probably means that there opinion could change when they find out how it works.

Shouldn't JMC be the bard?

Edit: LOL!!! He beat me to it.

Basically, just to go into a little more detail, which I try to avoid in opening posts since it causes people to skim, is take on any given day... Say... 5 guys. Okay, four guys and 1 SSG. There can be maybe 20-30 of you who sign up for this, but it's not something you would be required to do weekly or anything, just one of those things where if you wanna go, you're welcome to join the fun.

Events will happen in 2 ways.

1. I will announce in advance. I probally have to wait for Candace to get a job for this, as there's no way I can get half way through something and be nagged to about food. By the time I get all the rules set in a few weeks, she should have one anyway!
2. Spur of the moment. I'll sign on AIM, maybe send you a text if I know you, and whoever's around can join in on the fun.

Events can be for anywhere between say, 3 and 8 people. There's no set number really to how much or how little a party can play, those are just the norm. Anything below 3 and it'd be a custom-made adventure most likely, and anything above 8 and it would just take a long time. Events themselves would take, usually, between an hour or two, with me absolutely not endorsing those all-night-long AD&D sessions, fuck that.

Dungeons & Dragons is just a loose system I'm looking at, it won't be what we're playing. What we play will be my own system I created years ago, updated and perfected because I'm smarter now (well at least I hope so). It would be something I'd run, maybe, once a week, with whoever wants to come welcome, and whoever doesn't not being forced to. So don't worry about making a huge commitment, it's not gonna be like TNT where if you no-show next thing ya know you're facing Unit on Live.

You'll use a character of your choosing, and like WPW you can create multiple, or even new characters that will level up the more you play, and find enchancements, and wrestling moves. For example, Nick Comoroto may be on an adventure, and after defeating a pack of lizard men he may open up a treasure chest where he finds, you guessed it, a Turmoil Card! Nick finds German Suplex, which is now his to keep, but his character also learns the move, and can use it as a bonus attack once per adventure. Tons of things can happen, but at the end if everyone defeats the ultimate goal, you might all run straight into a nice big pot of WPW Store points, and maybe a few group cards. More details will come in time, but this is just an example.

System is still in development, and 1 of 2 options I'm considering, but it's very likely this will happen, as the 2nd option will take a TON of set-up time, a lot of time maintaining the system, and it's one of those things I get that I like to call, fantastic fucking idea that should never leave the mind. Something I'd love, something I'd gladly spend upwards of 30 hours creating, and another 20 maintaining, but someone everyone else would probally be largely indifferent to. This game, on the other hand, would take much less maintenaince time, is kind of already set up system-wise from when I was a kid so just needs a makeover, and I feel like it'd be more fun as well for the sole fact that you don't need to commit to it every single time it's run.

Anyway, if this happens, as it's looking possible, more details will be released in the weeks to come.

I'll opt out this time, Judge. It seems to be dependent on a few people being on-line at the same time for a reasonable amount of time. Plus, I know next to nothing about D&D and what I do know doesn't seem that interesting.

Well, I think it's settled. The score right now is 19-4, so unless the next 15 guys who log on all vote no, I think this is a safe investment to put some time into, and I'll get started on the system right away.

Expect an update within the next week.

I'm sure it'll be no suprise that you can count me in. This is even closer to what I do all the time (not D&D, but still fantasy roleplaying) than the fed is, so I'm up for it. I just need to slightly revert Forsaken back to his original character, pretty much mix them.

"Enchancements"? You mean enhancements, enchantments, or somethin else entirely?

Just so my 25 yes votes are aware, I've been working very hard on this ever since I announced it, and although it's alot more work than I thought it'd be, it'll also be totally worth it in the end.

Look for this to be ready to go, I want to say, October 1st. That's just a rough estimate, could be sooner, could be later, but I don't want to launch this until I've set up at least 5 seperate adventures to choose from (Just to start, eventually, we should have a ton), and until I've done at least one trial run.

Those who wish for to volunteer for the trail run that won't count for experience, but will greatly help, please say so here.

Update: Progress is going very well. At the moment, the core of the gameworld is being created, with individual adventures still in planning phases. I expect 4 Level 1 adventures to be ready for our tentive launch date of October 1st, 2007, with a 5th coming shortly behind it. The adventures have alot of thought put into them so far too, but right now the core is being worked on for balance, and we're busy adding armor, weapons, items, and monsters into the game world.

Let me answer a few questions that are bound to be on some people's minds. I'll answer 5 that I think are important off the bat, and will welcome any questions to be asked, and I will answer.

1. Spill it, what is the name going to be? The name of the game will be, simply, WPW Adventures. I thought of a million names, but this seems simple, to the point, and easy to click on and learn more.

2. How deep will the adventures be? Will they be so easy to understanda 10 year old can play? Will they go too deep I'll get confused? Very, very, very deep. That said though, I'm the only one who needs to know 90% of the information, so it'll also be easy enough to play and have fun. If you're a person who loves learning formulas and the inner workings of things, the information will be there for you to learn. You can calculate what adventure will give you what items you need to create a certain magic spell you want.... Orrrrrrrr, if you're someone who doesn't care about that and just wants to have fun, they do that too! It's win/win.

3. How much of a challenge are they? That will vary adventure to adventure. Each adventure will be completely unique from the others. You'll find a few that will be linear, hack and slash advenutres. You'll find a few that you need to use your brain in order to complete. Right now there are 2 adventures that are 80% completed, let me go into detail about both of them briefly.

Wreck Ashore is an adventure based on the fantasy world, and is a very deep adventure. It's only about, maybe, 30% of how deep an adventure can go, but I guarentee it's 400% deeper than most of the games you can buy in the store. This will be an adventure where you can wander around freely, aren't restricted by a dungeon, and depending on your desire, intelligence, and problem solving abilities can avoid almost 80% of the adventure's encounters. I wouldn't call this level easy, but it is a great begininers adventure to let you learn the "sandbox" mode of adventures, meaning free roam around until you solve the problem on your own.

Spaceforce: Space Station Xaltron will be part 1 of a 10 level sci-fi campaign that you'll be able to play over various different levels. In this first stage though, it's a straight forward trek through a Space Station that will test your ability to make crucial decisions, notice details, and of course, survive any encounters you run into. You don't get the same roam around world you would in Wreck Ashore, but as a result you also don't waste much time and the adventure stays hot and heavy throughout.

Overall, there will be many differant adventures to choose from in the end, with hopefully a brand new adventure to play every few weeks, and they will all be unique in their own ways of spawning fun. Ever hate it when you buy a game and every level is the exact same as the last one? You won't find that here.

4. How often will adventures be run? This is still up in the air, but assuming Candace gets a job soon, I should have a few spare hours at least once a week, and perhaps even more often. There won't be any set schedule for adventures, meaning, I'm not gonna say "Every Saturday at 8:00 PM". Alot of times, most of the time, they will be spur of the moment. Perhaps I'll announce it an hour before it starts. Sometimes you'll know in advance. I might say on Monday, that I'll be running a Thursday adventure at 6:00 PM Pacific time, and I might even say which adventure and let people sign up, and if they're not there go to whoever's next on the waiting list. I might do a whole lot of things, but as of now I can just say they'll be done frequently, and probally at least once a week, and depending on my mood, maybe even a few times weekly.

5. Can you briefly explain the level system? Briefly yes. We'll all start out at level 1, and the more adventures you do, the more you'll level up. I'm still deciding if I want it to be on a per-adventure requirement to level up, meaning for example, if you complete seven level 1 adventures you move on to level 2, or if I want to assign an exp value each adventure gives so that harder and longer adventures deal out more exp. I'm still working that out, but what I can tell you now is that there will be a total of 20 levels, and just like D&D, you won't be smelling the grass of level 20 for a long long time. I think, maybe, one or two people might hit level 2 before 2008, but I wouldn't be surprised if everyone was still level 1 by year end as well. Fear not though, because the game won't leave you behind. The maximum level is 20, but trust me, I won't be making level 20 adventures for a long, long time. Let's see if we even get that far before I spend time working into that! For now, all adventures created will be level 1-2 adventures, and only when people start getting close to level 3 will I start creating level 3 adventures, and so on and so on.

Please ask any questions you have, I'd love to answer them.

May be a stupid question, but I am a stupid person.. How deep (if at all) will the individualisation of characters go, or will there be different classes for users to choose from, etc?

Dude, you have way too much time on your hands

If I had too much time on my hands, this would be released September 1st, not October 1st. It's actually looking like I might have to push that date back to November, but I'll keep everyone updated on that. I've barely had any time at all online lately. This weekend was the first time I got a whole 8 hours to myself since June. I'm also not working on this alone, Forsaken Shadow has been a huge help, and the majority of my work has been my downtime at work. Trust me, I've been plenty hella busy, but that's not going to stop me from continuing to evolve WPW or these forums. You should know that better than anyone. I'm just, at the core, an innovator, and if I'm not creating something I'm not satisfied.

May be a stupid question, but I am a stupid person.. How deep (if at all) will the individualisation of characters go, or will there be different classes for users to choose from, etc?
I decided that with the wrestling aspect intertwined and all, and the idea of things getting too complex, to avoid a direct class system. So there won't be, say, Wizard, Warrior, Bard etc. selections in characters. All characters will start out the same, and the customization will all occur by you as the adventures go on.

This allows a more free system. If you don't like the restrictions classes bring it's perfect. For example, say you have $1000 at the end of an adventure. You can spend your money on cloth armor, which doesn't give much protection but does give you mana points, or you can spend it on leather, giving you HP and a bit more armor, or you can spend it on mail which gives you a ton of armor, but no other real bonuses. With no direct class systems there will be no restrictions.

As you level up and evolve, you will be able to start choosing skills to make your character unique from others. This system is still in development, but there will be many skills you can master in, but only so many points avaliable to do so. So do you master in sword wielding, do you master in archery, do you choose to master in wearing heavy armor giving you added stats, or do you go the magic route. There will be many options avalible to choose from.
