Christ, what happened to the Von Erich's? I completely missed that aparantly. And Crash was only 32?

It's a real serious problem. Compare it to any other profession, or if you want only the other sports, and the mortality rate is much much lower.

What's scary is you know that list is just going to continue growing and growing. Can anyone be so bold to say that no more names will be added before the end of the year? I won't.

I don't think Russ Hass is on that list.... But he wasn't "famous" just known.

First of all, there is no answer that covers each of these deaths to explain why they happen so young, as there were various reasons for all of them.

In the case of: Haystacks Calhoun, Giant Haystacks, Yokozuna you are talking about men with serious weight problems. They may also have been a factor in the death of the Big Boss Man.

With the Von Erichs, the first is bad luck, the others, are most likely the result of people being unable to cope with what happened to the one's that died before them.

Adrian Adonis, JYD, Vivian Vachon, Joey Marella, Brady Boone, all these are related to auto accidents. You can also add Owen as another death that came as the result of an accident.

Then there are several that have to do with natural health problems.

The rest seem to be heart attacks or suicides. You are talking about people doing something that takes a great toll on the body and the mind, and sometimes they are going to have trouble coping. There is not easy answer to fix the problem. You put your body through the things professional wrestling requires, it will have consequences.

To be honest is 50 even young anymore? I mean people die so many reason and so randomly you should be happy to get lucky enough to make it 40. Is that morbid? Hell, I am just happy to be alive.

Part of it must come from the psyche of what attracts these people to become wrestlers in the first place. Dare I say that they are naturally wreckless? Addicted to the buzz/pain that comes with the game? More likely to abuse their bodies in other ways (alcohol/drugs/fast cars) ? I would guess 75% of the deaths above fall into one of these categories. Are we to blame for encouraging them to indulge in this lifestyle?

Yeah, they're like the worst family in wrestling in terms of deaths. What's even worse, is I THINK almost all of them committed suicide. Or at least half of them did.

When you are more than half way there, you come to realize how old is redefined every decade.

Besides,

30 is the new 20, 40 is the new 30, and 50 is old enough to know better but established enough to not have to care.

Holy Shit! Molly Brown? I remember reading your articles a few years back. Good to see you...alive and shit. lol.

It's one of the laws of the universe. As Louis Blackman said: The good die young...but pricks life forever!

The good seem to die young because...

Hmmm, I was going to answer that, but then I realized that it's like asking why does a bear shit in the woods? They just do I guess.

Couldn't have said it better. Life expectancy is still in the mid 70s and the trend is upwards. BTW, one of the fastest growing age groups are those over 85. There will me more people living to 100. We all have several young years left in us. It would be a shame to have a midlife crisis in your twenties.

Not sure if we're going international here but if so, you can add Giant Baba, Jumbo Tsuruta and Shinya Hashimoto to the list.

Steriods, Stress, Weight problems.

Same reason alot of people die young. NFL did a study over the last 50 years or something like that, 130 NFL players died before the age of 50. Mostly linemen. Weight problems and stress do that to you, oh I bet cocaine doesn't help.

Same with wrestling, and the world you put bad things into your body and bad things are going to happen. Steriods wouldn't be banned if they weren't bad. From what I remember alot of those wrestlers are admitted steriods users and alot had weight problems during or after there career. Plus with the money and alot of them being prodominent in the 80's... you know alot of them were doing coke or whatever else drugs were around. Add that and the road and the nature of what they do... it's part of the sport. Ken is right, it's a certain lifestyle, some people just fit into. Look at Jake Roberts, who is still thankfully kicking around... he should be dead ten times over.

Just because we hear about alot of deaths from people under 65, doesn't mean that it's the new life expectancy really. Usually once people get past that benchmark, the current writers, fans, viewers, or whatever else someone has are past the decision making process. The newspaper isn't going to make a big deal about an average actor dying when he's in his 80's, because most people today won't really have known the name anymore, and it's not headline news. If said actor had died at 40 though because of a sudden heart attack, it might be higher up on the yahoo news list, people may have still been following his or her career, and as thus people are wondering why they died so young.

Not sure how well that all sounds since it might have been a bit of rambling, but let me use wikipedia's "famous people" death. Keep in mind, these are only remotely famous people who have died, but considering famous people are just like everyone else really, and may even have a higher rate of early mortality because of the crazy lives they lead, this list should accurately represent what life expectancy seems to be.

Only going to use data from the last 8 days.

As you can see many people still stretch into their 70s, 80s, and even 90s. Alot of the early deaths you see on this list were car accidents, executions, murders (tsk Benoit...), and suicides. There are a few people who do die from natural causes before retirement age, but it seems like the majority do reach past it.

My dad died at 51, but he had also begun smoking again, begun drinking again, and got fat again. As long as you take relativly good care of yourself, and aren't one of the unlucky souls who gets cancer at a young age or some disease like it, chances are you can live a full life and live to see your grand children. The problem with alot of these wrestlers is simple. Not only do they "not take very good care" of their bodies, but they take absolutely horrible care of them. Are steroids really worth it? For a moment in the sun, is it worth knowing you're practically signing up for a heart attack in your 40s?

Actually, do the good actually die young? Is someone "good" simply because they seem like a good person in the media? We don't know these people. I would wager that if they weren't famous, or exceptionally talented, we wouldn't like them at all.

For instance, if Jimi Hendrix weren't so ungodly talented on the guitar, would we have thought of him as anything else but a drug-addled hippy?
